El Médano

A windier, more laid-back resort town that's become the island's windsurfing and kitesurfing hub.

El Médano sits near Tenerife South Airport and is known for consistent trade winds that make it one of Europe's better windsurfing and kitesurfing spots, with schools and rental outfits along the beach.

The town has a noticeably different feel from the bigger southern resorts — more independent surf shops and cafes, fewer high-rise hotels, and a wide sandy beach that stretches toward the Montana Roja nature reserve.

It's also one of the more budget-friendly southern bases, with a genuine local dining scene rather than one built purely around package tourism. Being close to Tenerife South Airport is a practical bonus if you want to minimise transfer time on arrival or departure, and the Montana Roja headland offers an easy short hike with some of the best coastal views in the south.

Practical tips

  • Being minutes from Tenerife South Airport makes El Médano a practical choice for very short trips or late arrivals/early departures.
  • Wind is strongest and most reliable in the afternoon — factor this in if you're not there for watersports and prefer calmer beach conditions.
  • The Montana Roja walk is short (under an hour round trip) and needs no special gear.
