Loro Parque, Puerto de la Cruz
A zoo, aquarium and botanical garden in the north of the island, known for its parrot collection and conservation programmes.
Loro Parque opened in 1972 as a parrot park (the name means "Parrot Park") and has grown into one of the largest zoos in Spain, with exhibits covering gorillas, big cats, penguins in a purpose-built Antarctic hall, and one of the world's largest orca pools.
The park is also a registered conservation and research foundation, and funds parrot conservation projects internationally — something worth knowing if you're deciding between wildlife attractions on ethical grounds.
Exhibits are spread across a genuinely large site with mature, well-established planting rather than the bare enclosures typical of older zoos, and several shows (including a dolphin show and a sea lion show) run at scheduled times through the day, so it's worth planning your route around the show timetable if you want to catch them rather than wandering in without a plan.
