Prices in tourist-focused resort strips (Playa de las Américas, Costa Adeje seafronts) run noticeably higher than a few streets back, or in local towns like Los Cristianos or La Laguna. As a general rule, eating and drinking where residents do — not directly on the main tourist promenade — is the easiest way to cut costs without cutting quality.
Accommodation is usually the biggest single line item, and it swings enormously with timing — the same room can cost noticeably more over Christmas or in August than during a shoulder-season week in May. Booking flights and hotels separately rather than as a package sometimes works out cheaper for independent travellers, though package deals are still often the better value for a straightforward one- or two-week resort stay.
Packing the right gear — a good travel adapter, a decent daypack, sun protection — saves money versus buying it at a resort shop once you're there at holiday markup prices.
