Garachico
A small, beautifully preserved port town that was largely rebuilt after a volcanic eruption buried its harbour in 1706.
Garachico was Tenerife's main port until a 1706 eruption from the Trevejo volcano sent lava through the town and filled in its harbour. Rather than being destroyed for good, it was rebuilt, and today the cooled lava rock forms natural swimming pools right on the coast — El Caleton.
The town itself is compact and easy to walk in an hour or two: a restored castle, a handful of churches and convents, and a genuinely local, unhurried pace.
