Playa de Benijo
A wild, dramatic black-sand beach at the foot of the Anaga mountains, with no development in sight.
Benijo is about as far from a resort beach as Tenerife gets: a rugged, undeveloped black-sand beach backed by steep cliffs and jagged sea stacks, reached via a walk down from the village of Almáciga in the Anaga Rural Park.
It's known for strong currents and surf rather than calm swimming — most visitors come for the scenery, the walk, and sunset rather than a swim. Photographers in particular rate it as one of the most striking beaches on the island.
Getting there involves a walk down from the village, steep enough that it's worth treating as a short hike rather than a casual stroll, and the same walk back up at the end of the day. Combine it with a wider drive or walk through Anaga rather than treating it as a quick stop — the surrounding villages and viewpoints are part of what makes the area worth the trip.
