Playa Jardín
A black-volcanic-sand beach in Puerto de la Cruz, landscaped by artist César Manrique into one of the north coast's most attractive stretches of sand.
Playa Jardín ("Garden Beach") lives up to its name: the beach is wrapped in landscaped botanical gardens designed by César Manrique, with volcanic rock breakwaters that shelter the swimming area from the rougher Atlantic swell typical of the north coast.
It's split into three connected coves, giving you a choice of a livelier main section near the amenities or quieter stretches further along. Unlike a lot of north-coast beaches, the swimming conditions here are generally safe and family-friendly thanks to the breakwaters.
The gardens themselves are worth a slow walk even if you're not swimming — palm trees, volcanic rockwork and tiered pathways make it one of the more attractively landscaped public beaches on the island, very much in keeping with Manrique's wider work elsewhere in the Canaries. It's an easy add-on to a day spent in Puerto de la Cruz's old town rather than requiring a special trip of its own.
