Mild winters and a well-established expat community have made Tenerife a popular long-stay destination for retirees escaping northern winters.
Tenerife has a long-established pattern of visitors — particularly retirees from the UK, Ireland, Germany and the Nordic countries — booking extended winter stays of several weeks to several months, rather than a standard one- or two-week holiday. Los Cristianos, Las Américas and Costa Adeje all have well-developed infrastructure for this, from long-stay apartment rentals to English-speaking clinics and social clubs.

- ✓EU/EEA citizens can generally stay without a visa; UK and other non-EU visitors are limited to 90 days within any 180-day period under Schengen rules — check current requirements before booking a longer stay.
- ✓Long-stay apartment rates are usually significantly cheaper per night than short-term holiday rental rates — booking directly with an agency for a monthly rate is often better value than stringing together short bookings.
- ✓Private health insurance (or an EHIC/GHIC card for eligible EU/UK visitors, which covers necessary state healthcare, not private clinics) is worth sorting before a long stay.
- ✓Los Cristianos and Las Américas in particular have well-established social clubs, English-language church services and expat community groups, if that kind of routine matters to your stay.
